Apprenticeships/traineeships provide practical employment-based experience in the workplace supplemented by structured training at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) which allows the participant to receive a nationally recognised qualification. The combination of on and off-the-job training whilst under a contract of training with an employer differentiates apprenticeships and traineeships from other forms of vocational education and training.
In total there are approximately 480 different apprenticeships/ traineeships offered in Western Australia, across 16 industries.
Training Packages
The Resources Industry Training Council (RITC) is also responsible for liaising with industry, government bodies and Industry Skills Councils (ISCs) such as SkillsDMC and Manufacturing Skills Australia regarding the content of and updates for training packages, which are then officially endorsed by the National Skills Standards Council (NSSC).
The main training packages covered by the RITC are as follows:
- RII09 Resources and Infrastructure Training Package
MSA07 Manufacturing Training Package
PMA08 Chemical, Hydrocarbons and Refining
PMB07 Plastics, Rubber and Cablemaking Training Package
- PMC04 Manufactured Mineral Products Training Package
- MSL09 Laboratory Operations Training Package
In Western Australia apprenticeship and traineeship qualifications are registered as Class A or Class B qualifications. Class A qualifications are those that a person cannot obtain except by fulfilling the obligations of an apprentice under a contract of training. Class B qualifications are those that a person may, but need not, obtain by fulfilling the obligations of an apprentice under a training contract. The public registers can be found here.
TGA (training.gov.au) is the official National Register of information on Training Packages, Qualifications, Courses, Units of Competency and Registered Training Organisaitons (RTOs).
